Cochin International Airport (CIAL)

Landscape

Embodying the charm and essence of Kerala, the landscape design for Kochi International Airport, in collaboration with Kembhavi Architecture Studio, offers ‘A Journey Before the Voyage,’ blending Kerala’s traditions with modernity. Visitors are greeted by tall grass reminiscent of lush, ever-green paddy fields and a curved green wall, extending from floor to ceiling, adorned with native shrubs and vines — paying homage to the Nettipattam, an ornate decoration of traditional Kerala temple elephants. A ribbon-shaped, multi-layered garden draped in greenery ties the entrance together, complemented by hornbill sculptures in earthy Corten steel.

These elements create a gradual transition towards the interiors. Inside, an island centrepiece surrounded by greenery and water celebrates Kerala’s coir industry, enhanced by a glass ceiling. Maritime-inspired elements like a boat-shaped wall, calming water features, and shaded walkways define the upper levels. Relaxing spaces, including an amphitheatre and a pergola-shaded court with heritage-inspired designs, creates an immersive, experience for travellers.
